Candles blessed on Candlemas day are brought home to be used throughout the year for religious celebrations, sick room visitation, as sacramentals during time of hardship, danger and for Divine guidance.

As a part of the Presentation of the Lord feast, Candlemas is one of the most beautiful processional celebrations of the liturgical year. First recorded in the 4th century, the feast commemorates the presentation of Christ in the Temple, forty days after His birth and the purification of Mary.
Preceding the observation held on February 2nd, it is particularly timely to announce from the pulpit and in the weekly bulletin that the blessing of candles for use in the home, is a significant highlight of this ceremony. Following Mass, the blessed candles are distributed to the congregation and a customary offering is made by the recipient.
